AKO MAESTRO. MAESTRO AKO. I AM A TEACHER A tribute to teachers on World Teachers Day I am a teacher. I rise before the sun, not because the day has begun, but because there is much to prepare— a lesson to plan, a mind to awaken, a life to touch. Before I enter my classroom, I have already entered a hundred worlds: the curriculum, the standards, the lesson plan, the learning materials, the activities, the assessments, and the endless question— “How can I make them understand?” I am a teacher. I prepare when others are resting. I read when others are sleeping. I check papers long after the classroom is empty. I revise lessons when the first one did not work. I search for another way when a learner says, “I still don’t understand, Ma’am.” or “I still don’t understand, Sir.” I carry more than books. I carry the worries of a child who comes to school hungry. I carry the silence of one who has lost confidence. I carry the dreams of parents who hope education will give their children a better life. Sometimes, I teach mathematics. Sometimes, science. Sometimes, language and history. But every day, I also teach courage, discipline, kindness, responsibility, and the simple truth that failure is not the end. I am a teacher. I have sacrificed weekends for school programs and activities. I have given evenings to reports and preparations. I have spent my own time and sometimes my own resources to make a classroom better. There are days when I am tired. There are days when the paperwork seems endless, when the problems seem bigger than me, when appreciation is scarce, and when I quietly ask myself if anyone notices how much I give. But then— A learner finally reads. A struggling child finally understands. A shy student finally raises a hand. A former student comes back and says, “Teacher, I made it.” And suddenly, every sleepless night has a meaning. Every lesson prepared. Every paper checked. Every correction made. Every sacrifice given. It was never wasted. Because I am a teacher. I may not build bridges of steel, but I build bridges to opportunity. I may not command armies, but I help shape the minds that will lead them. I may not hold the highest office, but I sit every day before the people who may someday hold it. Doctors may heal the sick. Engineers may build the future. Lawyers may defend justice. Leaders may govern nations. But somewhere in their journey, there was a teacher who first taught them how to read, how to think, how to dream, and how to believe that they could become more. That is why I am proud to be a teacher. Not because the work is easy. But because it matters. Not because I am always recognized. But because I know that even when my name is forgotten, the lives I have touched may carry my lessons forward. I am a teacher. I teach not only with my voice, but with my patience. Not only with books, but with example. Not only with knowledge, but with compassion. And when the years have passed, when the classroom walls have changed, when my name is no longer written on the school records, I hope there will be someone walking through this world a little wiser, a little kinder, a little braver— because once, I was their teacher. And if I were given the chance to choose again, after all the sacrifices, the long preparations, the difficult days, the sleepless nights, the paperwork, the pressure, the tears, and the countless challenges— I would still choose the classroom. I would still choose the child. I would still choose the calling. Because I am not simply someone who teaches.
